How to Treat Cracked and Painful Skin Caused by Winter

Winter can wreak havoc on your skin. Whether you’re someone who suffers from dry skin year round or not, when the colder winter months come, many people experience the effects of dry skin caused by winter weather: meaning skin that can become dry, red, itchy, flaky, cracked, irritated, and painful during the dry winter months.

Why Does Our Skin Get Dry in the Winter?

Humidity is low both indoors and outdoors in the winter. Less moisture in the air means less moisture in the skin, and the result is red, dry, itchy, and sometimes even cracked and painful skin caused by winter. So how do you get through the winter months without dealing with this irritating and often painful skin situation?

Here’s what experts and dermatologists recommend.

How to Treat Cracked and Painful Skin Caused by Winter

  1. Use a humidifier and set it to about 60% – this should increase moisture in the air enough that it replenishes the moisture in your epidermis but not enough to cause mildew or water to collect on windows.
  2. Take fewer or shorter showers and baths. If you can, limit yourself to just one short 5-10 minute shower or bath daily. If you shower or bathe longer than that, you’ll risk stripping the oily layer that helps your skin retain moisture. And use lukewarm, not hot water.
  3. Soap dries the skin out. Try either gentle, soap-free cleansers like Cetaphil, or at least make sure that your soap is a moisturizing preparation (such as soaps from Dove or Olay). And make sure that your soap or cleanser is perfume and alcohol-free.
  4. While you’re at it, make sure you’re using fragrance-free laundry detergents and avoiding fabric softeners.
  5. After bathing or washing your hands, gently pat or blot your skin dry with a towel.
  6. Apply moisturizer frequently throughout the day, but especially after taking a bath or shower, and after each time you wash your hands. Moisturizers work because they trap existing moisture in your skin. That’s why applying moisturizer while your skin is still wet helps to seal in moisture and protect and soothe your skin more effectively.
  7. Use moisturizing ointments or creams in addition to or instead of lotions, especially if you have sensitive skin. Ointments and creams tend to be even more effective (and potentially less irritating) than some lotions.
  8. Consider wearing gloves to bed after applying moisturizer. This can help prevent your skin from rubbing against the sheets and trap in even more moisture.
