How to Make Dehydrated Fruit and Veggie Chips

It’s simple to make dehydrated fruit and veggie chips if you have a dehydrator. But it’s also super simple to do without!

First, it’s good to know which fruits and vegetables do best with being dehydrated. Some fruits that are most suitable for drying or dehydrating are:

  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Peaches
  • Plums
  • Apricots
  • Mangoes
  • Pineapples
  • Bananas
  • Cantaloupe
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries

Vegetables that are great options for dehydrating include:

  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Corn
  • Green beans
  • Potatoes
  • Zucchini
  • Tomatoes

If you plan on doing lots of dehydrating, and you have the kitchen space, you might consider investing in a dehydrator. But if not, you can make dehydrated fruit and veggie chips just using your oven! Here are the steps.

  1. If needed, slice your fruits or vegetables into relatively thin “chips.” For some fruits, like blueberries, or vegetables like green beans, slicing is unnecessary.
  2. Set a cooling rack on a baking sheet. If you don’t have a cooling rack, you can instead line the baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  3. Arrange your sliced fruits or vegetables in a single layer that are close together, but not touching each other.
  4. Set your oven to its lowest possible temperature. This should not be hotter than 180 degrees Fahrenheit.
  5. Once preheated to the lowest possible temperature, place your baking sheet on the middle rack.
  6. Crack the oven door 2 or 3 inches so that it is slightly open, and leave the fruits and veggies in the heated oven for at least an hour. Thicker cuts of some fruits and vegetables will require slightly more time; check every 30 minutes.
  7. You’ll know your fruit or veggie chips are done when all of the moisture is gone from them. Fruit chips should be pliable, but not sticky feeling. Vegetable chips (and some fruits, like apples) will be more crisp, closer to the texture of a typical potato chip.
  8. Store your fruit or veggie strips in airtight containers or bags. They don’t need to be refrigerated, but they will last the longest if you store them in a cool, dark place.
